SORT Separate what is needed from what is not needed. Keep only what is necessary.
SET-IN-ORDER Place everything closest to the point of use. A place for everything and everything in its place.
SHINE Establish cleaning as a form of inspection. Ensure that areas are tidy and sanitary.
STANDARDIZE Establish policies and procedures that will assist in maintaining or improving the first three S's.
SUSTAIN Establish and create behaviors and a culture where daily improvements and maintenance are the norm.
The 5 Ss
SORT: Get rid of clutter. Remove items not used in the work area. Items infrequently used should be identified and stored out of sight.
BEFORE:
SET IN ORDER: Organize the work area putting tools in place. Production items and their storage locations should be clearly identified, with accessibility prioritized with reference to use. No sharing of cleaning materials/utensils between work areas.
AFTER:
SHINE: Make sure the work area is always clean. Designate a champion to frequently observe work stations.
STANDARDIZE: Written standards/checklists to establish order and cleanliness. A specific time should be reserved for cleaning work stations, and a checklist created for each cell.
SUSTAIN: Maintain the standards through training, empowerment, commitment, and discipline. Designate a champion to ensure areas are sustained. (EX. Inspections before and after shift). Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) need to be created/updated.
